Island Synchronisation’ interrogates the relationship between human intervention and nature. Islands in Hong Kong are densely populated and artificially modified. The existing fabric captures a unique style of living yet is still segregated, a clear domination of man made. Have we considered what would be a better way to co-exist and synchronise as a broader whole?
The project proposes an alternative model of islands that promotes mutual benefits by merging a prototype of a hiding habitat for undersea wildlife with a resting place for divers and fishing villagers. The design challenges the inconsiderate actions of humans and puts the emphasis on the beneath. It raises the awareness of the importance of understanding our impact on other living creatures that are not easy to be seen.

The Kau Yi Chau Artificial Islands, part of the Lantau Tomorrow Vision reclamation plan, are marketed as a utopian project that will simultaneously ignite economic prosperity, embrace environmental conservation, and support sustainable development. An achievable dream or merely a fleeting hallucination?

‘AI (Artificial Islands)’ is an exploration of what happens when you detach vision from context. Looking through the eye of generative AI image software, the hypothetical islands begin to take shape, inviting the viewer to contemplate the potential implications of this monumental construction and their own desires for modernity. What symbols of progress will the algorithm reproduce when fed official descriptions of the project? What flaws will show through? And how are we ultimately able to navigate the surreal path laid before us without heading toward catastrophe?

WWF and famous local wildlife photographer and filmmaker Daphne Wong co-produced the short documentary “Sea of Noise”, taking the audience beneath the waves and visualising how Chinese white dolphins perceive the underwater world with sound. The film details dolphins’ plight living in such noisy underwater through cymatic experiments, underwater footage, animation, stakeholder interviews, and explains current conservation measures, with highlighting the importance of preserving local biodiversity in Hong Kong.

With the support of “Hong Kong 114˚E Reef Fish Project”, Eva has the opportunity to explore the Peng Chau waters. She will show us photos of the beautiful coral taken by her and other Project members, and share with us the anecdote of that particular diving experience. Meanwhile, coral in Peng Chau has a close relation with the community in the early days, Tony, as the admin of Facebook page “Peng Chau History”, will briefly introduce it.

'Rubbish Regatta' is a free workshop for young people (and the young at heart), using discarded materials collected from the beaches and bays of Lantau Island, to create motorised boats, which will be raced and exhibited.
Participants are welcome to work individually or in groups, and all skill levels are welcome.
The workshop encourages ecological awareness, creative use of materials, experimentation and playful creativity. The workshop is run by Australian artist, tinkerer and creative technologist Tully Arnot, who is now based in Hong Kong working on a PhD.

The tours led by the Inter-island Festival team members will show you some of the projects and the island life by the sea.

Starting from to-day bookstore, we will walk along the promenade of Cheung Chau, where some of the projects are located.

In 'Navigating Utopia', we’ll take a critical look at the utopian vision presented by the Lantau Tomorrow Vision and the AI-generated images presented in 'AI (Artificial Islands)'. It aims to foster discussions on the broader context, environmental considerations, and societal implications of Hong Kong's development. How do we envision modernity and what kind of future should we build for HK’s island communities?

A presentation on the Kau Yi Chau artificial islands and their potential consequences will be followed by a group discussion and AI-image generating workshop where participants will create fictional narratives to explore the future communities that may inhabit this artificial landscape.

“Rhythms of the Inter-Island” is designed to draw visitors’ and residents’ attention to often overlooked qualities and dimensions of the relationships that characterize and distinguish life on the islands, by making them accessible to auditory experience, enjoyment, and reflection. The project creates and presents music composed and performed in response to sounds and voices heard and overheard near the sea, to explore and appreciate the vibrancy, fragility, and resilience of the inter-island environment that sustains the culture and identity of islanders.

The series of sound installations is made of found objects spreading found and composed sounds at different points of a public space. As visitors walk pass, they hear sounds arise — result of unseen interactions with the elements or themselves. Sounds echo each other, forming strange, asynchronous melodies, and invite passers-by— suddenly transformed into improvised musicians— to explore an ecosystem of sounds. Calling visitors to “listen otherwise”, by triggering surprise, discovery, curiosity, and reflection, the installation questions our perception and representation of sounds/noise, and brings attention to our kinship with the sea and the wind, two vital and defining elements of island life.

Two artists living on the outlying islands interact with voices, rhythms, drums and sounding objects on board, and talk with the wind and waves, and appreciate the emotions and impressions of the ferry for more than 30 years.

The island of Cheung Chau has long been a source of inspiration for artists, a place where the rhythm of the waves and the whispers of the wind have played harmonious melodies for generations. But is this idealist vision still true, are we "InTUNE?" with nature? The exhibition “InTUNE?” brings together the work of four talented Cheung Chau artists: Olgierd Nitka, Louis To Wun, Preston Hartwick, and James Wolfe. Through their distinct artistic expressions, they show the diverse ways humans harmonize with nature. James's sculptures, crafted from oil barrels remind us that whatever we throw away comes back to us mostly as a burden. Preston's photographs of the beach serve as poetic reminders of the passage of time and the relentless flow of nature. Louis's delicate bamboo structures convey the flow of water, DNA evolution, and the ongoing cycle of life. Lastly, Olgierd’s large canvases blur the boundary between human figure and a decaying environment.

In a performance of traditional outdoor music from Chinese opera, The Gong Strikes Ones evokes soundscapes of festivity: when celebration is in the air, it spreads contagiously, to all residents of the island, whether it started as a tiny gathering between friends or a large community-moment…!

Collaborating with Harmony (dimdimmama), our activity will start off with her sharing of a picture book, 'The Best Sound in the World', at To-day Bookstore on Cheung Chau. A strolling around Cheung Chau will follow, allowing us to experience the sceneries through our ears in forms of sound. We will also visit some elderly fishermen on the island; together we will walk down memory lane to look into their contact with sounds during the good old days on the boats!

Alternatively, ignite your creativity with guided forest art activities, or splash about in our freshwater mountain stream, and discover what creatures may lie within.

With the freedom to choose from a variety of guided/semi guided activities offered, create treasured memories and deepen your connections with loved ones and the natural world on this unforgettable journey of exploration and discovery.

‘Inner Hearing of Island' is an auditory enhancement roving installation in Mui Wo during the festival. Public can experience the pre-recorded environmental sounds of non-human islanders, such as plant, river, and animals, listening to their daily lives. The installation changes the island journey perspective from visual, which general public are familiar with, to hearing, which islanders experience especially at night. Apart from the recordings, a real-time auditory enhancement device will be provided for public to “see” the island with the magnified surrounding sounds, enabling them to share the islanders’ daily experience.

In this English-language poetry writing workshop, participants will be briefly introduced to the short story 'Stone' in Bison, a book of ecological stories by the Hong Kong writer Ng Hui Bun recommended by One City One Book this year. Participants will then compose their own poems around natural objects like stones, shells, or leaves. While participants are encouraged to collect and bring their own objects to write about, a selection will also be provided. This workshop is family-friendly.

Before the completion of the festival, join us on a kaito ferry, sail on the Inter-island Sea and enjoy the performances by musicians from the islands!

A walk along the Chi Ma Wan trail and the old village path to Tai Long Wan beach takes us into past centuries of Island Life. We’ll learn about the villages and the ways of life that were part of our island community before Hong Kong existed, walk through old agricultural fields and a farming village, and visit a (nearly) deserted beach where we may find pieces of Chinese pottery washed up from 100 year old shipwrecks. We will take a sampan from the old pier and end our walk in Cheung Chau.

I invite fishermen and other inhabitants working and living on Cheung Chau to share their auditory experiences by interviews and field recordings. Through their voices, we get to know another layer of the lives of the Cheung Chau locals in the form of sound.
Different tones, rhythms and pitch make every person’s voice unique. With all the sounds collected on the island, “Sound Translator - Cheung Chau” weaves the sounds of people together, re-presents their lives on the shore, and introduces an alternative way to listen to the land and sea.

"Water of the great sea – emerges twice a day respectively as morningtide and nighttide."

Humans live by solar time, from dawn to dusk, a 24-hour cycle.
Coastal organisms, however, live by lunar time, two tidal 'bulges' a day, a 24 hour-and-50-minute cycle.

Because of the tidal rise and fall, significant differences in temperature, humidity, and wave exposure can be found at different heights on the rocky shore. This gives birth to a colorful gradient of life, from algae growth to organism colonization, an ecosystem zoned from low to high levels.

The life forms found within compact space, a few meters of height difference along the coastline, sometimes exceed what is found at several hundred meters sprawl on land.

The lunar time is manifested through the habitats on the rocky shore.
The coastline is no longer just a line because of the tides.

‘Situating Circatidal’ aims to visually explore the biodiversity patterns in the coastal environments of Peng Chau and Mui Wo - at the intersection of co-dependent survival and territorial kinships, to retell the stories of lunar time.

A leaf falls, swiftly swings in the air, and lands. Such a seemingly useless gesture of Nature, yet tremendously significant to the cycle of life. It dies, degrades, and gives nutrients to maternity again. Lengthy time of degradation feeds its pollination partners, nurtures the soil and shields its roots from dehydration.

The rafts that gently rock on shimmering glitters, embark daily lives of the Islanders. The familiarly recognisable, simple yet sophisticatedly built structure has been proven to be efficient through centuries of sailing in the sea. It provides a vessel for earning, embodies everyday events and records the evolution of the industry.

These are seemingly useless gestures but indeed useful every day. Poetic while silently functional.

The artwork, 'S’way', is an interactive installation designed to offer a moment of tranquility for the Islanders. This piece conjures up the youthful days of my father and uncles, creating an abstract collage that captures their perspective of the fishing boats swaying back to the island's shore and the collection of fisheries, a crucial ingredient for their soy sauce trade.

Echoing the simplistic elegance of a leaf or a boat, the piece takes on the dual functionality of a hammock and a rocking chair. 'S’way' aims to revitalize traditional boat-crafting techniques, taking form from materials that were traditionally used but are now discarded: timber for the frame; repurposed nylon threads for the cradle; and idle hands for weaving. This installation intends to be flexible to rearrange, foldable for storage and fashionable as a sculpture to various context.

As the first generation of 'land-dwellers' among the legendary boat-dwellers of Causeway Bay, Miriam wishes to share with the audience the collective memories of this vanishing community. She started the project “Strolling Tanka” in recent years to re-discover the past livelihood of the Causeway Bay Tankas and their interaction with the development of Hong Kong. By collecting the stories of elderly family members and their friends, she hopes to outline the daily lives, traditions, celebrations, spatial arrangements, movements and relationship with other islands and people of this floating community at the heart of Victoria Harbour in the quest to trace her Tanka roots and connection to the sea, re-valuing the family history and identity.

If the great sea had memories, what would it record about us?
Inspired by the ancestral legend of the human-fish hybrid ‘Lo Ting’ and the pirate queen ‘Zheng Yi Sao’, “Beyond the Shore" (Peng Chau version) connects mythology, history, and gender. Arriving at Peng Chau, we engage in a series of local interviews to understand the relationship between islanders and non-islanders with the sea. Through interactive dance theatre, we embark on a journey of self-reflection and rewrite our own maritime stories.
Prior to the performance, we will have a ‘Ferry Experience’. Through the vibrant live music and storytelling, we welcome you to our voyage.

Starting from Mui Wo pier, we will walk through Chung Hau Street and Wang Tong. While enjoying the sunset, you will see some exhibition and works in Mui Wo for the Inter-island Festival. Finally we will go back to the pier along the beachside.

The tour involves ‘Situating Circatidal’, an exhibition about the intimate relationship between the tide, coastal environments and organisms in the interisland region. Having this central theme in mind, visitors will be led to explore a rocky shore in Peng Chau to link between the exhibition content and actual, on-shore ecological patterns, and reflect on how the circatidal rhythm acts as the ultimate driver of coastal ecology and biodiversity.

The dimensions of the installation will delineate and approximately reproduce the boundaries of a small structure that once perched on the rocks of Nam Wan (南灣), Peng Chau. The artist will paint designs on the interior of the paper, and at night the final installation will be lit from within like a large lantern, revealing designs once the light is activated.

The artwork’s creation will take place as a series of performances in Tung Wan during the festival on the first two weekends, and the complete artwork will be revealed to the public on the festival’s final two weekends. To facilitate this, there will be additional public sessions of preparing the fibers prior to the festival. Paper will be made western-style from cotton and linen, incorporating waste textiles donated by islanders as part of its production. To create each sheet of paper, the artist and volunteers will enact a brief performance where they float the large [up to 120 x 120cm] paper screens in the sea, pour paper pulp into the screen, remove it from the water and dry the paper directly on the screen.

Water Dwellers’ may forever remain strangers to the land. Their ancestors might not have remembered their choice to live on the sea. However, later on, for the sake of their descendants, they returned to the land, carrying the last remnants of their entire family after their final journey of drifting between the sea and the shore. Drawing inspiration from personal and local history, I step into another end of time and space in Cheung Chau to observe the place where we find ourselves today.

The workshop / short film screening is part of Jason Gu Jiacheng's project "Together in Time: Cheung Chau Theatre Collective Archive". Showing the short film and the miniature model of the theatre, Jason invites participants to recollect and share their memories of the theatre. Shedding light onto the past, he hopes to discuss the building's future. The workshop process will be recorded and edited into a final version of the film which will be shown on November 25th!

One day, Mr. Yam Gong came from Peng Chau to visit Chow Yik Lam(Lam) on Cheung Chau. They talked about poems but couldn't get enough of them. So, Lam took the inter-island ferry to accompany Yam Gong back to Peng Chau while they read aloud each other's poems on the ferry.

The abandoned Chi Ma Wan prison was once a Vietnamese Refugees Camp in 1980s. What memories do you have about the Vietnamese refugees issue in Hong Kong besides the radio broadcast ’Bat Lau Dung Laai’? ‘Stray in Chi Ma Wan’ is a tour to discover more stories behind this ex-Chi Ma Wan Detention Camp. Besides, you will also see stray buffaloes and a hidden reservoir in Chi Ma Wan.

Take a walk and make handicrafts with the Mui Wo neighbors, and see how Mui Wo people rediscover the uniqueness and loveliness of the Mui Wo community. "If I have another chance to choose, I would still choose Mui Wo!"

Looking at how meaning is constructed in architecture and how it mediates between the past, present and future, this project seeks to intervene in the Cheung Chau Theatre through action in space.

The collective memory of the local community was collected through a combination of research, interviews and questionnaires; the current state of the theatre was carefully documented through 3D photogrammetric modelling and archaeological drawing; and a miniature model of the theatre’s past form and its filming apparatus was created based on the previous research, representing images of the theatre’s past space.

The whole process produced a film that acts as an archive, making the building a vessel that reveals the space and the story to people. After community screenings, the project goes beyond the preservation of a monument to emphasise the design of a place for understanding the past and dialogue with the future. Participants will learn about the Archive of Cheung Chau Theatre, which was built collectively by local residents, through screenings and workshops, and together they will join in the sharing of memories of the theatre's past and discussions about its future.

The Peng Chau Cinema has been there since 1978. Apart from the Cheung Chau cinema, it was the second cinema on an outlying island that was inaccessible by vehicles. As an islander, I used to walk by there, thinking what it could have become if it was still in use nowadays. An architecture, an abandoned space, still full of old chairs and memories. Aside from occasional references to ‘meeting at the cinema’ during item exchanges, does it still have an impact on the lives of the island residents? We will find out the answer among these stories shared by old islanders.
Most of the island's stories are passed down by word of mouth, so I went through the streets and alleys to collect oral histories from the people of Peng Chau, in order to collage the time when the Peng Chau Theater was still in use.

What kind of narrative would there be if we look at the world not from the perspective of land, but from the perspective of islands and oceans?

‘Drifting Fragments on the Sea Shore’ is a collaborative project by Joanne and Jessie. Allured to casual conversations touching on personal memories, imagination and research about islands, the pair initiated a project to write an alternative historical narrative — one deeply rooted in a place. Encapsulated with a series of postcards, letters, diaries, drawings, found objects and photos, this small archive will be home to the long-lost memories and stories of the islands.

Traditions require three conditions to survive through circles of life: communities, free public space and the resilient local knowledge. Our mini research exhibition shall utilize the socio-economic networks between islands and commission Cheung Chau’s Yau Luen company to make flower plaques, which were co-designed with designer Tam Shui. On pedestrian-friendly islands, where there are no cars on the streets, and the sky and the sea are intertwined – visitors can find these three “exhibition boards” rich in outlying island characteristics along the shores of Peng Chau and Cheung Chau. They would display the results of our study “A Tango with Kaito”, and allow viewers to enjoy the lesser design.

As part of this map model production project, we hope to further explore our impact to the natural environment and community through a three-dimensional terrain map, as well as using buildings to illustrate the neighbourly relationship between Mui Wo and its surroundings. Our main focus to depict Mui Wo's evolution would be based on data collection, site visits, on-site inspections, and photography that documents changes of historical structures and remnants in Mui Wo.

Each island has its own rhythm, and ferries play a key role in linking them. Are the islands closed or connected; are connection uni- or multilateral? In a casual conversation, we invite senior ferry operators to talk with history and logistics scholars. Let's pay equal attention to practice and theory. The sharing will take place on the Peng Chau kaito ferry, allowing participants to feel the tidal rhythm of the island.

During a six-session video class, the young directors wandered the streets of Peng Chau, focusing their cameras on the daily life of the island, their favorite people and neighbours, weird and funny things, mountains and seas, trees and birds... and transformed these shots into their own experimental short films.

Cheung Chau is full of spectacular yet lesser-known corners. Many distinctive features are well conserved given its geographical advantage from the hustle and bustle, carrying vital evidence of the development of this lovely land. Eric and Johnny, co-authors of Empty City as well as Cheung Chau locals, will unveil the mysterious side of the island with you while tracing down the vestige of the dated culture engraved here.

5+2, a human being, a space, a period of time, some thoughts, what is freedom, truly.

Celebrating it's 10th anniversary this year, wknd Market is honoured to bring together groups and individuals who care about the Hong Kong community and living in harmony with nature.
This half-day event will be a market with stalls of Hong Kong businesses and groups that support mindful lifestyle, along with series of unique Mui Wo experiences provided by local artisans and wellness professionals.

Since the pandemic, artists from the island have been exploring the landscape of the island through their artistry. Feeling and listening deeply to the abundance of the land’s flora and fauna, its undulating terrains, and its more-than-human family.

The workshop will be a movement-based class awakening our bodies as flowing vessels, guiding our attention to our senses through contact improvisation and somatic exploration.

In the evening screening, two short films shot in the vicinity of Lantau East will be presented. “Like A Bubble, Like A Reality”, created by Kiwi Chan and Liane Mah, is a portrayal of transfiguration taking place amongst flowing vessels in entanglement with boundaries and borderlines. “A Play in Presence”, created by Thomas and Flo Vinton from Muse Circle in collaboration with Liane Mah, captures a group of friends co-creating a music and movement improvisational journey in nature.

Without any restrictions, what kind of life would you like to live? When our mind is calm, the desire in our subcon- scious will be revealed in different ways, vision is one of them. Singing-bowl therapist Zero will use the 'multi-sensory experience' to share her journey of creating an island life via her vision. Through photo-exhibition, real-life stories, singing-bowl-meditation and self-exploration, you will be guided to access your vision to co-create the ideal life.

You will be guided to make a pair of Asalato, a traditional musical instrument of West Africa, in a 45-min workshop. Of course, you bring your masterpiece home.
After the workshop comes the 30-min jam session! Mentor Travis will lead you through the rhythm of this beautiful instrument and make sure you are submerged in this acoustic melody.

Forest bathing is a nature-based well-being practice that enhances our natural ability to adapt to changes in our lives, more positively and healthily, supporting a better quality of life.
While it is possible for you to practise Forest bathing on your own, Sang Ok Kim, a Mui Wo resident and certified Forest Bathing guide, will design and guide you through a structured sequence of nature connection activities that have been proven effective by scientific evidence and years of testing by professionals relating to the field. Participants can expect a unique Mui Wo experience that will enhance their connection to nature and strengthen social relationships, boosting the therapeutic and restorative effects of nature for your general health and well-being.

In the embrace of sea and mountains, Mui Wo is blessed with the abundance of crops and plants and rich community stories. While we practise Tai Chi in various locations, we also get to know more about this piece of land, allowing our minds and sensation to connect with it. We invite you to settle your body and mind in this ambience and learn the basics of Tai Chi. We will also share with you the stories around the “Bridge”.

Every place has its unique games. Can you imagine Peng Chau, an small island with about 6,000 people, has developed its particular style of playing mahjong?!
Local residents with the know-how will guide you through the learning of these unique games. Let’s have fun together and play like an islander! You can also be the next master!

Every space in Ning’s Yard is created and curated with regenerative principles. Join us for a ceramic tile workshop using local soil and a delicious brunch made with seasonal and local vegetables.

Surrounded by nature in Chi Ma Wan, South Lantau, yoga will be performed on the beach or grassland for an hour. Combined with the sound bath of tuning forks, you can interact with nature, enhance internal and external awareness and connection, and let go of your worries and stress. Afterwards, you will have an hour leisurely walk to Pui O with a local neighbor. They may have lunch on your own in Pui O or take 10 minutes bus to Mui Wo on their own. Alternatively, you can choose to stay in Chi Ma Wan after yoga.

The lifestyle of islanders seems varied from that of citizens. People from outside the island seek tranquility on the small island, where a stretch of sea separates it from another ideal life. Whether native islanders born and raised here or new islanders who have moved from elsewhere, everyone has their own story. We hope to explore the magic of the small island together, coming together to share our ideal island nation.

The project also include a half-month satellite exhibition featuring Cheung Chau flower board at various spots on the island, showcasing the stories of 9 islanders as well as the ideal ways of life they found.

Cheung Chau-based artist Olgierd Nitka will share his expertise in a variety of graphic techniques that inspire his art, including stencil, linocut, stamping real objects, and stamping real surfaces. You'll gain insight into the unique qualities of each technique and discover their distinct artistic charm.
Following the presentation, Olgierd, alongside artist Aga Mori, will guide participants in the creation of their own artworks.

Join us for this special gathering of like-minded community in the wilderness of Lantau for this heart-warming day of wellness. We will start the day off under the trees with grounding yoga (12 Nov) or “Dancing to the Inner Temple” (26 Nov) led by Bex, before being treated to a nourishing Brunch cooked by plant-based chefs Paloma and Matt. The afternoon then begins with “Transformational Breathwork” led by Matt, followed by tea, cake and a fire to keep warm as evening approaches.

These sessions remind us of the mind-body connection and renews and rewires the way our body moves and functions to bring permanent changes for improved posture and overall health to the systems of the body. It reminds us we are all interconnected and raises our vibration.

The traditional card game ‘Yau Fu’ (游糊) has become almost extinct, but a group of villagers on Cheung Chau still play it regularly. There was even a factory on the island specialising in the production of such playing cards!

Experience the captivating fusion of two seemingly unrelated concepts in the artwork of local artist Plastered 8. 'Synchronized Revolution’ brings together the grace and precision of synchronized swimming with the powerful imagery of Chinese revolutionary ballet, specifically ‘The Red Detachment of Women.’
Originally performed in China in 1964, ‘The Red Detachment of Women’ featured women dressed in revolutionary army attire, dancing with guns and grenades. Plastered 8's ingenious combination of synchronised swimming and this iconic ballet has resulted in a series of stunning visuals—children gracefully dancing and playing both above and in the water.
Join us at this exhibition to witness prints of these extraordinary works, beautifully displayed on abandoned homes. Additionally, sculptures will protrude from walls, with one hidden amidst the enchanting forest. To enrich the experience, the exhibition also features a collection of artworks generously donated by the Wang Tong community, creating a truly breathtaking community-based outdoor gallery.

With the long commute, why did Green Green Soap still set its studio on the island? Come and explore the studio of Green Green Soap, an old house located in an alley.

Have a short trip on Cheung Chau and enjoy the less beaten tracks of the island. Make your own cup of coffee in the outdoors. Sitting by the beach in autumn, where we talk about islanders’ lives with a cup of coffee in hand.

Shelly, a harper living on Lantau, will serenade us through sea themed tunes and songs to celebrate the Inter-Island Festival.

Into the Wild

Peng Chau residents Eduardo and Mei Ling regularly go to the neighbouring Lantau Island to collect cow dung for compost. Participants will visit their fertile garden on Peng Chau and the benefit of cow dung, followed by taking a ferry to Mui Wo and collecting cow dung together. The collected cow dung will then be brought to ‘Winnie the Farm’ to compose, completing the ecological cycle on Lantau.

Taking inspirations from Bison and Watching the Cattle authored by Hong Kong writer Ng Hui Bun (Xubin), participants will be invited to collect materials from a nearby beach and complete a collective drawing on cattle in this family-friendly activity. We hope to listen to a sea of stories, pick up treasures in time, and build new bridges.

Island bookworms gather monthly to discuss ways of being on the island. In November, we will focus on “Ways of Being Alive” by Baptiste Morizot. In this book, the French philosopher states that the ecological crisis we are facing is also a crisis of sensibility – that is, a crisis in our relationships with other living beings. He argues in the book that time has come for us to accept our identity as living beings and change our relationships with other animals, seeing them not as inferior lifeforms but as living creatures who have different ways of being alive. The book brings fundamental ideas that can help you navigate the islands and some of the Inter-Island Festival projects. You can read the book ahead of the sharing or come with all your curiosity!

We invite everyone to join us to create habitats for solitary bees using these materials and, at the same time, learn about their characteristics – homes for bees and knowledge for us.

In this event, we will introduce Ng Hui Bun (Xubin)’s short story collection Bison to the participants. It aims at triggering collective memories inspired by the relevant objects, animals and people in her essay 'Watching the Cows'; participants are then invited to share their life stories on the island. For example, stories about people and animals, objects, and places. We expect to hear a sea of stories from our participants. Let’s pick up treasures in time and make new bridges!

Peng Chau is an ideal place for dogs to live. Two little furry friends who were far apart from each other before moving to Peng Chau with their owners; Wang Wang and Xoey, have a strong contrast in their appearances: white and black, old and young, boy and girl, small and large; However, they both like this quiet and cozy island very much from their hearts.

The activity starts from Peng Chau Pier and walks along the harbour front to Nam Wan. Experiencing the regular dog walking route together with Wang Wang and Xoey, watching the scenery of Peng Chau from their perspective, listening to the story of the island, and getting to know the people and things the two furry friends have become attached to.
